The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be conducting a test of its emergency alert system today, Wednesday, Oct. 2023.
FEMA will test its national emergency alert system this afternoon. Starting at approximately 1:20 p.m., Laredo time, cellphones across the country will sound an alarm and display a message reading, “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
All radios and televisions will broadcast a similar message at that time as part of a concurrent test of the national Emergency Alert System and people with phones set to Spanish will see the message in Spanish.
The test is the second of its kind for the National Wireless Emergency Alert System, and it’s the first to be sent to all cellphones without requiring user permission first.
The message will display for 30 minutes, but phones will only play an audio tone, similar to that of an Amber Alert, at the start of the 30-minute window. On most cellphone models, that tone will stop as soon as users click a button. Phones that are off throughout the 30 minutes won’t receive the emergency message.
Parents! Mark your calendar for LISD's Parent Academy of Learning Sessions for October 2023. *If you have any questions, please reach out to your school's parent liaison.*
